Vision Series: Learn.Feel.Do

Current Series

This Week’s Topic: Learn.Feel.Do

Hola and welcome back to week two of our current series VISION.

Last week, we received really great feedback about our new series structure. If you missed part one, be sure to check it out.

For those of you that made resolutions, I hope that you are still sticking with them. For those that have given up already, you can always re-start your resolutions tomorrow.

It was Stephen Covey who wrote “Begin with the end in mind” in his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

This week’s topic “Learn.Feel.Do” is inspired by an exercise that we do with our clients during their kick-off meeting. It helps us begin with the end in mind.

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO FOR ANY EVENT…PERIOD.

And if you think it applies only to corporate meetings, not so. For example, every event has a feeling. And, that feeling is transferred to the event goers. So, even if you are planning a wedding or a rock concert — it’s important to know the feeling you wish to create.

On behalf of the entire team, have a joyful week!

Creating a Vision for your Event

The very first meeting with a new client at All About Presentation is called the Kick-Off Meeting. It is during this meeting that we conduct the Discovery Process. The entire process (which consists of about 6 components) from start to finish takes about an hour. But this step is so crucial to understanding the objectives of the event and how we determine if we accomplished our vision.

One part of the Discovery Process is an exercise we call Learn Feel Do. We ask our client to sit back and relax…and think about the event from a post-event perspective. At the end of the event, we discuss what event goers will have learned, felt, or done as a result of the event taking place.

*WARNING* – This is definitely not the sexiest part of planning an event, but it is the most important.

Here is what we mean in more detail.

What do we want people to LEARN – What are the educational objectives? Do salespeople need to know the ins and outs of a new product? Do we want people to learn more about the host or guest of honor? Are there new systems that require training? Is there a change in the corporate strategy that we need to announce? Do we need to come up with better ways of doing business?

What do we want people to FEEL – From a cultural standpoint, how do we want them to feel during the course of the event and then how do we want them to feel when they leave?

For example, in a time of crisis, the goal might be to impart fear or make attendees edgy as they’re presented with the challenges, but excited and upbeat about new strategies when they leave. If there are multiple goals, we need to ensure they all dovetail and follow the right sequence.

What do we want people to DO –This portion also has several components, including action at the event as well as action after the event. The “do” part during the event can be anything from learning about new products or techniques to encourage participation at activity stations. Actions after the event range from selling more widgets to telling all their friends on facebook about “XYZ”.

In Summary

Even though this is just part of the Discovery Process, by taking some time to go through the Learn.Feel.Do process, you’ll be guaranteed a better outcome.

Why?

Because every decision made after — from the color of the linen and decor, who will be speaking, catering decisions, and even the venue — will be the result of a carefully thought through vision for the event. And any decision that doesn’t support the vision will be ineffective.
